Adult Education

When you enroll your child at LGPNS, you (as the parent) also become a student in the adult education program through the Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation Center.  The time you spend in the classroom each week with the children is your "laboratory time," and your attendance at our parent only night meetings is your "class time."  The night meetings focus on child development and helpful parenting skills. This is a perfect time to meet with other parents to discuss challenges you are facing, to share tips and ideas, and to have some fun!

Here is a look at our upcoming schedule of night classes for the Spring 2010 semester:
Night Meeting #6 at LGPNS:
Separate Sessions (6:30pm social, 7-10pm class)

Here's another chance for you to meet with your child's teacher and the
parents from your class only.  You will discuss classroom business, themes
for upcoming lessons with a focus on your child's particular developmental
stage.  This is also a great opportunity to ask questions of and get tips
from other parents who are likely experiencing similar challenges.  Specific dates for class meetings are as follows:
MWF Class: Wednesday, January 13
T2s Class: Thursday, January 21
T/TH Class: Tuesday, January 19
PM Class: Tuesday, January 26

Night Meeting #7 at LGPNS: Wednesday, February 10, 2010 (6:30pm social,

Childhood Nutrition with Erika Deshmukh

Let's face it...who has time to read these days (especially on a topic
like childhood nutrition where information is constantly changing and opinions
are hard to separate from facts)?  Come hear the most up-to-date
information on nutritional guidelines, portion sizes, food adversions, table
manners, stocking cabinets for healthy eating, food allergies, the organic
debate, and much more.  Plus, we'll have a chance to have fun and get our
hands dirty making some healthy snacks.

Erika Deshmukh is the Registered Dietitian for weight loss programs at Pacific Athletic Club, Decathalon, and Courtside Club. Erika ran the Youth Nutrition Program for the past several years as part of a grant with Palo Alto Medical Foundation/Camino Medical Group for 4th and 5th graders in Santa Clara County. This was a 10-week program geared towards science curriculum and making nutrition education relevant and fun for kids. Erika is completing a master’s in nutrition education and has been a guest speaker for many nutrition programs including Boy Scouts of America, Mayor’s Youth Conference Mountain View, and prenatal and weight management classes. She has developed curriculum and taught nutrition education to more than 1000 5th graders. Erika is also passionate about kids and nutrition and understands the multi-faceted challenges that parents face today from her own experience as the mother of a 3rd grader.
